The Indian Army has locked in a patent for its homegrown “Automatic Target Classifying System based on Artificial Intelligence,” a leap forward in the country’s tactical tech development.

Created by Col. Kuldeep Yadav, the system uses sensors and algorithms to scan radar signals and instantly sort out what’s on the screen — whether it’s an aircraft, vehicle, or personnel — without human assistance.

The payoff: faster response times, fewer errors, and sharper situational awareness on the battlefield.

The military sees the system as a force multiplier in modern combat, where split-second decisions can decide outcomes. Because it works across different radar platforms, it’s versatile enough to plug into multiple operational environments.

This patent fits squarely into India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” drive, a national initiative aimed at boosting indigenous innovation and cutting dependence on foreign imports.

In a social media post, the army said, “The innovation developed by Colonel Kuldeep Yadav reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to fostering the spirit of innovation, strengthening technological self-reliance, and promoting #Atmanirbharta in the defense domain.”

Track Record of AI Innovation

Colonel Yadav isn’t new to this space.

In 2023, he patented an AI-based accident prevention system that detects driver drowsiness and issues real-time alerts, a tool aimed at curbing road accidents and saving lives. That patent is valid for 20 years.

Taken together, these patents highlight how AI-driven tools can advance both military capability and civilian safety, demonstrating the Indian Army’s growing role in fostering applied innovation for defense and beyond.
