US President Donald Trump has shared an AI-generated video depicting an attack on Iran’s Kharg Island, posting the footage on Truth Social alongside the message: “Kharg Island being blown to smithereens!!!”
The video shows explosions engulfing what appears to be a major oil facility. Trump later shared a second AI-generated clip depicting missiles striking a coastal oil complex.
However, there is no evidence Kharg Island was actually attacked during the latest US-Iran escalation.
Reuters reported the footage was likely synthetically generated, while a US official said American forces had not targeted the island.
The actual US operation targeted two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, near the Strait of Hormuz.
Vice President JD Vance later said Trump’s post was intended to send a message to Iran, rather than announce a military operation.
US-Iran Conflict Timeline
The latest US-Iran escalation comes after months of fighting, pauses, and renewed military pressure between Washington and Tehran.
Washington briefly paused its air campaign in late July as pressure shifted toward Iran and the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards later claimed to have stopped oil tankers attempting to pass through the waterway under US protection.
The conflict then intensified when the US military launched a “heavy wave” of retaliatory strikes against Iran after Iranian attacks on American bases in Jordan.
The latest escalation came on August 30, when US forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island. US Central Command said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was preparing to use them to deploy sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran subsequently retaliated with ballistic missile launches toward US military bases in Jordan.
Why Kharg Island Matters
Kharg Island is Iran’s main crude oil export terminal, handling 90 percent of the country’s oil exports from the Persian Gulf. The island also houses major oil storage and loading facilities and serves as a key hub for Iran’s energy exports.
Its location and infrastructure make it strategically important to Iran’s economy. An attack on Kharg Island could significantly disrupt Iran’s oil exports and affect commercial shipping and energy markets across the region.
