The US Navy is piloting an AI tool that analyzes sailors’ career histories, preferences, and potential, then recommends suitable job assignments for them to consider without obligation.

According to DefenseScoop, the effort aims to streamline assignments for more than 200,000 sailors through a more personalized, AI-supported career-matching process.

Sailors receive an initial email with around 10 suggested roles based on their service record and stated preferences.

“The initial email is sent out, … based on whatever the AI is seeing from their career path, what their preferences are. And then after that, they can have the more high-touch experience,” said Ben Kohlmann, assistant secretary of the navy for manpower and reserve affairs.

Early results from the pilot, which has involved a few thousand personnel, show a 40 percent increase in sailors opting to continue into a second term.

“We’ve seen this 40% increase in the number of sailors who have decided to stay for their second term … because that high touchpoint makes these sailors realize the navy does care about them,” Kohlmann added.

The initiative remains in a pilot phase, with the navy planning broader rollout if results continue to validate its effectiveness.
