Kazakhstan is stepping into the era of AI-driven defense with the creation of a dedicated artificial intelligence unit under the Ministry of Defense.

The new unit will lead the digital transformation of the armed forces, developing and applying AI tools to support various missions.

The initiative follows President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s call to accelerate military digitization with AI, a plan officially confirmed by Deputy Defense Minister Darkhan Akhmediev.

“We will soon launch the Artificial Intelligence Department at the Ministry of Defense,” the Uzbek news outlet Daryo quoted Akhmediev as saying.

“I am currently gathering a team. If you have suitable candidates, write to me. The salary is good, there is a strong social package and various benefits from the army.”

Core Functions

The new AI unit will focus on implementing solutions that can analyze large data sets, automate management, model operational scenarios, and enhance decision-making in the armed forces.

The tools will also be used to support human resource development.

The unit will be responsible for training officers and specialists in digital technology, algorithms, and AI systems, while working with domestic and international research centers, universities, and IT companies.

The cooperation is intended to help the AI unit meet defense requirements and could eventually lead to the creation of a national school to train students in military AI applications.
