The next leaders of the UAE’s AI-powered drones may not come from the military, but from the country’s top programmers.
State-owned EDGE Group is partnering with the Ministry of Defense (MoD) to launch the inaugural Drone Challenge, where Emirati citizens in teams of two or three will compete in a series of programming tasks.
The competition offers young programmers a platform to develop practical AI-backed software solutions while working with drones and other robotic systems.

Emirati citizens aged 18 and older are eligible to participate, with over 900,000 dirhams ($245,000) in prizes up for grabs.
The Drone Challenge will take place at the 2026 UMEX Unmanned and Autonomous Systems Convention in Abu Dhabi from January 20 to 22.
Leading the Next Generation
EDGE said the Drone Challenge is part of its efforts to “invest in human capital,” aiming to equip UAE residents with advanced programming skills that support national security.
Its partnership with the MoD underscores a commitment to the country’s “Principles of the 50” initiative, which emphasizes the role of skilled national talent in driving future growth.
Interested participants can register through the event’s website, with applications closing at the end of November.
