In a recent congressional hearing on US Special Operations Forces (SOF), lawmakers and defense officials signaled a broader shift toward AI-driven warfare, pointing to the growing role of artificial intelligence in modern missions.

Reports note that rapid technological change is compressing decision timelines and reshaping how forces operate across contested digital environments

AI, drones, and cyber tools are also becoming more accessible, raising the possibility that smaller states and non-state actors can challenge more advanced militaries with fewer resources.

US military leaders said SOF is well-positioned for this shift, operating in an environment where digital and physical domains are increasingly intertwined, and AI-enabled tools are shaping how missions are planned and executed.

“The bar to access advanced technology like AI, drones, and complex cyber tools has never been lower,” said Congressman Jason Crow.

‘We Must Adapt Faster Than Our Adversaries’

Admiral Frank Bradley, commander of US Special Operations Command, said the military must keep pace with rapidly evolving technologies, urging forces to “adapt faster than our adversaries” and accelerate the integration of emerging capabilities.

He pointed to cyber and the digital domain as critical areas in future conflict, describing them as key maneuver spaces alongside traditional environments.

Despite the rise of AI-enabled platforms and the shift to AI-driven warfare, officials stressed that human oversight remains central to lethal decisions.

Currently, US efforts focus on embedding AI into command and control and battlefield planning, including the use of AI chatbots to generate operational response options from real-time intelligence.
