The US Department of Defense (DoD) has partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT into its GenAI.mil platform, putting advanced tools directly into the hands of up to three million service members.

The rollout supports the military’s day-to-day work, including planning, analysis, logistics, and administrative functions, while keeping sensitive data secure within DoD-approved systems.

GenAI.mil was designated as the department-wide platform for delivering AI at scale, with the OpenAI partnership marking a major expansion of those capabilities.

Since its launch in December 2025, the platform has surpassed one million users across all military services, establishing itself as the department’s central hub for AI-enabled decision-making and operational support.

The move implements the department’s Artificial Intelligence Acceleration Strategy launched in January 2026, which aims to move AI out of pilot projects and into real-world warfighting, intelligence, and enterprise operations.

“We will become an ‘AI-first’ warfighting force across all domains,” said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the time, outlining plans to accelerate AI experimentation, remove bureaucratic barriers, and align investment decisions to achieve military AI leadership.
