Artificial intelligence is helping the Philippine military spot explosive hazards faster, keeping deminers out of harm’s way.

Safe Pro showcased its SpotlightAI, an AI-powered drone imagery analysis ecosystem, during a week-long humanitarian unexploded ordnance (UXO) and landmine detection training program hosted by the Philippine Army at Camp Aquino in Tarlac.

Drones captured imagery and fed data into the system, leveraging the company’s SPOTD (Safe Pro Object Threat Detection) module to detect and classify more than 150 types of hard-to-spot explosives, including landmines, anti-personnel mines, and cluster munitions.

Over 30 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians received training on how Spotlight AI can speed up the detection and identification of threats. The activity was facilitated by the Golden West Humanitarian Foundation, with funding from the US Department of State.

Safe Pro Chairman and CEO Dan Erdberg said the company looks forward to supporting the Philippine government’s efforts to eliminate explosive hazards.

“[We] are grateful for the opportunity to help educate the next generation of EOD technicians on the powerful impact that our AI can have on their remediation programs.”

Spotting Explosive Hazards

According to a 2024 report from the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, cited by Safe Pro, several Asian countries continue to grapple with landmines and unexploded ordnance.

The company has been expanding its operations across the Indo-Pacific to help reduce the risks involved in detecting these threats.

“The scale of UXO contamination across the Asia-Pacific region and its emergence as a future geopolitical hotspot creates a tremendous opportunity for our AI and its ability to provide enhanced real-time situational awareness in support of military and humanitarian operations,” Erdberg noted.

In July, Safe Pro was contracted to supply ballistic and explosive ordnance disposal protective gear, as well as its Spotlight AI system, to support US Indo-Pacific Command forces.

These include the Pacific Fleet, Pacific Air Forces, Army Pacific, Marine Forces Pacific, and Space Forces Indo-Pacific.
