Drone footage could soon become instant intelligence for the US Army, as a partnership with Safe Pro Group explores using AI to automatically identify threats, hazards, and other critical objects in aerial imagery.
At the center of the effort is the company’s Safe Pro Object Threat Detection (SPOTD) platform, which uses AI-powered computer vision to analyze aerial imagery and generate 2D and 3D geospatial models.
SPOTD can identify more than 150 types of landmines and unexploded ordnance and has been deployed in Ukraine for nearly three years, according to Safe Pro.
Army Puts AI to Work on Drone Data
Under the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, the army and Safe Pro will explore how uncrewed aerial systems and sensor data can be converted into analytical products for military operations and engineering applications.
The project will use AI-powered object detection to help personnel identify hazards and build a clearer picture of conditions on the ground, with potential applications spanning civil works, military engineering, and disaster response.
Safe Pro chief executive Dan Erdberg said the agreement expands the company’s work with the army beyond military operations.
