Ukrainian troops are developing an AI-powered system that can reduce operational planning from hours to minutes while keeping commanders in control of final decisions.
Named Marichka, the new AI battlefield planning system functions as a secure neural network that helps commanders analyze complex battlefield data and evaluate operational options more quickly.
Brigade and regiment commanders currently spend six to 12 hours reviewing large volumes of operational documents before approving plans, according to Yuriy Klyat, head of the Central Research Institute of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“The system, similar to ChatGPT, allows for centralized collection of information, calculation of the ratio of combat potentials, and modeling of possible options for action,” Klyat said, as quoted by Suspilne News.
The AI tool, named in honor of a patriotic Ukrainian woman, has already successfully completed test tasks, institute officials revealed.
Beyond Autonomous Weapons
Marichka is part of Ukraine’s broader push to expand the use of artificial intelligence across its armed forces.
In May, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andriy Lebedenko said the military had begun integrating AI agents into command-and-control systems to speed up battlefield data analysis, including assessments of enemy forces and Ukrainian troop capabilities.
He also noted that AI is already being adopted across military drones, weapons, and radar systems, with Marichka extending its use into battlefield planning.
