A Washington DC-based AI company backed by a team of US Navy veterans has received seed funding to expand its product line and services for maritime defense.

Founded in 2021, Spear AI develops edge-deployable AI tools designed for undersea surveillance, domain awareness, and tactical decision-making.

Its core product, Horizon, processes real-time acoustic and sensor data from naval systems to enable rapid, AI-driven insights across submarines and surface vessels.

It also offers Forerunner, a real-time inference engine that runs AI models directly on deployed platforms, and Omega, an onboard simulation suite.

In addition, the company provides subject matter expertise and technical support in AI pipeline development and acoustic data management.

Its latest seed round was backed by investments from Scare the Bear Capital and Cortical Ventures.

“This investment is a validation of our vision to transform maritime data into actionable intelligence,” said Michael Hunter, co-founder and CEO of Spear AI.

“Scare the Bear Capital and Cortical Ventures understand the urgency of delivering operationally relevant AI at the edge, and their support enables us to accelerate delivery to our defense and commercial partners.”

Eyeing Global Expansion

Spear AI is already working with the Pentagon and the US Navy on applied AI for maritime missions. Now, it is looking beyond US waters.

The company plans to expand its global footprint, aiming to bring its real-time decision support tools and sensor-driven platforms to a broader set of defense and security partners.

“Our mission has always been to close the gap between emerging AI technology and real-world mission demands,” explained John McGunnigle, co-founder, executive chairman, and CTO for Spear AI.

“This funding enables us to grow our technical services and engineering teams to help more partners build the data and AI capabilities they need to operate faster, safer, and smarter in the maritime domain.”
