Silicon Valley startup Elio has introduced an adaptive optical technology that could help military systems identify small drones and other difficult-to-track threats in complex operational environments.
Rather than passively recording a scene, the system lets AI direct the sensing process, dynamically adjusting how incoming light is processed based on changing battlefield conditions and mission objectives.
It does this through programmable optical components that process light before it reaches the image sensor.
According to the company, AI continuously adapts the optics to interpret objects and materials by their physical signatures instead of relying on conventional pixel-based imagery.
This approach could improve the tracking of fast-moving aerial threats in darkness, haze, or smoke, and other degraded visual environments while reducing the need for multiple specialized sensors.
It also enables a single sensing module to perform multiple functions and gain new capabilities through software updates.
Beyond drone defense, the tech could support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, perimeter security, and autonomous vehicle operations, where reliable target detection remains a persistent challenge.
Elio recently raised $21 million in a funding round led by Innovation Endeavors and Xora to further advance its AI-driven optical sensing platform.
