Artificial intelligence is taking center stage in Ethiopia’s defense modernization as the country opens a new research laboratory backed by the UAE.

Located at the Ethiopian Defence University, the Advanced Central Laboratory will serve as a national hub for defense research, technology development, and specialized training.

According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Defense, the facility houses dedicated laboratories for artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, communications, automation, electrical power systems, 3D printing, computer numerical control machining, and prototyping.

The laboratory is expected to accelerate the development of indigenous military technologies by linking research with workforce training and real-world applications.

Defense Tech Push

Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed described the laboratory as a flagship initiative to strengthen Ethiopia’s technological base, while Ethiopian Defence University President Brig. Gen. Kebede Regasa said it will help prepare the country for evolving security challenges.

The facility is part of Ethiopia’s broader strategy to expand expertise in AI, cybersecurity, and advanced engineering while reducing reliance on foreign defense technologies.

Developed through the Ethiopia-UAE bilateral partnership, the laboratory also highlights deepening cooperation between the two countries in military innovation.
