European defense AI firm NestAI has launched an initiative to develop sovereign AI models for battlefield autonomy and military command, with the Finnish and Estonian defense forces set to pilot the first systems.
The models will be trained on operational data gathered through the company’s NestOS battlefield operating system, supplemented by synthetic data and large-scale simulation.
The initial AI family will focus on powering autonomous unmanned systems and supporting battlefield orchestration, helping commanders coordinate operations and make faster decisions across military forces.
According to Peter Sarlin, executive chairman and founder of NestAI, battlefield AI cannot simply adapt commercial models because modern warfare presents fundamentally different challenges.

“A road is a forgiving environment, with lanes and rules. The battlefield is the opposite, contested and unstructured, with an adversary working in real time to defeat whatever you field,” Sarlin said.
“Defense requires sovereign frontier AI built specifically for the battlefield, allowing it to adapt with evolving threats, adversaries, and conditions.”
Piloting Battlefield AI
The Finnish Defence Forces and Estonian Defence Forces will receive early access to pilot the models, marking the next phase of the trilateral AI initiative announced in June.
Under the agreement, Finland, Estonia, and NestAI are collaborating to develop interoperable AI capabilities for command-and-control and autonomous military systems.
The company said additional allied militaries are expected to join the initiative as it expands.
