The Asgard digital system will help soldiers find and attack enemy targets from much greater distances. Following successful trials by British soldiers in Estonia, Asgard uses artificial intelligence and secure communications to help soldiers make faster decisions about targets, saving crucial time in combat. The system will make the Army ten times more lethal over the next ten years. It combines weapon systems, surveillance equipment, automated technology, digital connections and data analysis. Asgard forms part of the work to create a wider digital targeting web across the UK’s Armed Forces by 2027, backed by more than £1 billion in funding. It will better connect military weapons systems, allowing battlefield decisions for targeting enemy threats to be made and executed faster. The digital system will see the British Army leading the way in NATO in its use of technology to change how it fights, improving speed and accuracy.

The UK has created a new military unit to embed artificial intelligence (AI) into combat operations, targeting faster responses in increasingly complex battlespaces.

The Rapid AI Delivery Taskforce (RAID), announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will report to the Chief of the Defence Staff and provide warfighters with tools to accelerate planning, process live data, and deploy autonomous systems to improve force protection.

London said RAID’s work will focus on intelligence analysis, electronic warfare awareness, predictive planning, and AI-enabled drone swarming capabilities.

“Britain faces a clear choice: shape the AI revolution or let it shape us,” Starmer explained. “That choice has far reaching impacts across our economy, our public services, and our national security.”

“We are taking control of our future … safely, quickly, and responsibly,” he added.

Not Another Gimmick

According to the Ministry of Defence, RAID brings together military personnel and technical specialists in a single structure.

The unit will also be able to bypass standard procurement processes to keep pace with rapidly evolving technologies, with a focus on contracts for local tech firms and startups.

Among its early partners is England-based software company Rowden, which secured 25 million pounds ($33.5 million) in funding to scale national security technologies and expand its workforce by around 500 jobs.

“Technology is rapidly changing the nature of warfare and we are keeping our forces at the cutting edge,” UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton also commented on the effort, assuring that it will produce tangible outcomes rather than just be a publicity stunt.

“I am determined that TF RAID is not just another piece of window dressing, set up to give us comfort that something is happening,” he stated.
