The US Army is moving to establish new career paths dedicated to artificial intelligence and machine learning, marking a significant step in its broader push to modernize for future conflict.

According to internal documents reviewed by Military.com, the service plans to create a new enlisted military occupational specialty, designated 49B, focused specifically on AI and machine learning.

A corresponding track for warrant officers is also in development, aimed at placing technical experts within operational units.

In parallel, the US Army intends to formalize an AI-focused area of concentration for officers, allowing personnel in fields such as cyber and signal to build full careers in AI without leaving their core branches.

An internal memo said the new roles are intended to deliver “the needed agility by integrating processes through dedicated [artificial intelligence and machine learning] operations for evolving mission objectives,” Military.com reported.

Focus on AI

The initiative builds on the Army Artificial Intelligence Integration Center (originally the 2018 AI Task Force) tasked with accelerating AI integration through workforce development and partnerships with academia and industry.

The career path expansion comes as the army increases its focus on AI, autonomy, and digital infrastructure under the current administration.

However, while service leaders have emphasized the importance of AI in future conflicts, many operational units remain in the early stages of integrating new technologies.

A timeline for finalizing the new AI career fields has not yet been announced.
