From malware analysis to mission planning, US Cyber Command (CYBERCOM) wants artificial intelligence handling more of the military’s cyber battlefield.
The command is seeking a major increase in funding for its “AI for Cyber Operations” program, growing the initiative from $5 million in fiscal year 2026 to $138 million in fiscal year 2027 amid broader Pentagon push toward AI-enabled warfare capabilities, Breaking Defense reported.
AI Expansion Plans
The planned investments span intelligence gathering, offensive cyber activity, defensive missions, and the broader infrastructure needed to support AI-enabled cyber warfare.
For intelligence and surveillance, AI tools would help cyber teams process large volumes of digital data faster, identify suspicious activity, track adversary behavior, and improve operational awareness across cyber missions.
In offensive cyber operations, AI could support target development, automate parts of mission planning and dependency analysis, and improve operational throughput by speeding up cyber planning workflows.
On the defensive side, AI systems could accelerate malware analysis, improve threat detection and incident response times, and automate reporting as cyber threats become increasingly machine-driven.
Funding would also go toward foundational AI infrastructure, including cloud systems, generative AI models, large language model access, Retrieval-Augmented Generation frameworks, agentic AI capabilities, and workforce training.
The request builds on CYBERCOM’s 2024 establishment of an AI task force within its Cyber National Mission Force, following Congressional direction to develop a five-year AI roadmap for cyber operations.
It also reflects broader Pentagon efforts to deploy AI systems aimed at accelerating cyber defense and vulnerability analysis at machine speed.
