Maryland-based digital services firm SMX is teaming with Google Public Sector to pilot AI solutions for US military missions.

The project, part of the Pentagon’s Long-Range Enterprise Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (LEIA) task order, will test selected AI software designed to improve communications, speed up processes, and make smarter calls on the frontlines.

The collaboration will see the usage of Google’s in-house capabilities, such as the Optical Character Recognition, Google Translate, and other advanced machine learning capabilities.

The two companies plan to build a dedicated operations center where these AI tools can plug directly into command-and-control systems.

Throughout the project, they will work with World Wide Technology, a Missouri IT services company, to provide cloud integration, secure networks, and scalable infrastructure in deployed environments.

“We’re proud to work with SMX and the LEIA team to help bring transformative AI capabilities to the defense industry,” said Jan Niemiec, managing director at Google Public Sector National Security.

“By combining secure cloud collaboration with generative AI and machine learning, we’re delivering new tools that help improve agility, reduce friction, and enhance mission readiness.”

Moving Into a ‘New Chapter’

In its announcement, SMX called the project a step toward fusing commercial AI with defense needs, giving the Pentagon an early look at how emerging platforms can supercharge field tasks.

“This initiative represents a new chapter in how the [Department of Defense] applies secure, scalable commercial technology to mission operations,” SMX Global Defense President Dana Dewey said.

“Our team at SMX led the development and orchestration of this partnership to support LEIA long-term strategic objectives. We’re excited to enable AI-driven decision advantage where it matters most in mission-critical outcomes.”
