France will field-test its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered battlefield command system, Arcadia, during a major NATO exercise in Poland this month, pitching it as an alternative to the US-built Maven platform.

French Army Deputy Chief of Staff Gen. Patrick Justel called Arcadia “our response to Maven,” underscoring growing concerns in Europe over reliance on non-European defense tech.

NATO began using Maven in 2025 after its development under a Pentagon-led program aimed at streamlining large-scale data for real-time battlefield insights.

While Maven developer Palantir said the platform complies with NATO interoperability standards, some European officials remain cautious.

“The question arises whether we should adopt Maven blindly, or should we look for other solutions,” Defense News quoted Justel as saying, highlighting Arcadia’s potential role in Europe’s broader push for “digital sovereignty.”

Presenting an Alternative

Arcadia is designed to process warzone information, support targeting, and speed up decision-making across operational environments.

Unlike Maven’s centralized architecture, Arcadia uses a distributed mesh network designed to maintain functionality even if parts of the system are interrupted.

Developed in collaboration with Mistral AI, Safran, Thales, and Airbus, the system aligns with NATO’s Federated Mission Networking requirements and has already undergone early testing in France and Romania.

Following its introduction, several European countries have reportedly shown interest in the domestically developed AI platform.

“When we talk to our European partners, we get the same reaction of, ‘well, we’ve kind of gone with Maven because there’s no choice, but if countries in Europe are able to build an alternative, we’ll go for it,’” Justel said.
