From spotting military targets to evaluating the aftermath of strikes, BlackSky is advancing artificial intelligence designed to accelerate space-based intelligence for military operations.
The company has secured multiple US research and development contracts to expand its Gen-3 AI capabilities, enabling government customers to automatically identify targets, assess battle damage, and analyze satellite imagery within classified environments.
In one of the contracts, BlackSky will enhance its automated target recognition tech while continuing to develop AI-powered battle damage assessment tools that help military decision-makers quickly evaluate the effects of strikes.

Gen-3 Satellites Power AI-Driven Intel
BlackSky’s Gen-3 satellite constellation combines 35-centimeter-resolution imagery with AI-driven analytics to deliver tactical intelligence in near real time.
The satellites can revisit areas of interest multiple times a day and deliver intelligence within as little as 60 minutes of image collection.
High-resolution imagery enables automated detection and classification of more than 35 types of tactical objects, reducing analyst workload while supporting time-sensitive missions.
Designed for persistent monitoring of facilities, borders, and maritime zones, the Gen-3 constellation provides defense and intelligence organizations with timely insights as operational conditions evolve.
“BlackSky’s commercial AI capabilities are adding machine speed to our customers’ space-based intelligence decision loop, compressing time and increasing the accuracy of strategic and tactical assessments during live operations,” BlackSky chief executive Brian O’Toole said.
O’Toole added that the continued US investment reflects growing alignment between the company’s AI development roadmap and current and future operational requirements.
