South Korea is investing nearly 50 billion won ($36 million) to establish an AI defense robotics innovation cluster aimed at accelerating the development, testing, and commercialization of next-generation military robots.

The initiative, led by South Chungcheong Province in partnership with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the city of Nonsan, seeks to create a dedicated ecosystem where AI-powered defense technologies can move more quickly from research to deployment.

Supporting ‘K-Defense’

The investment underscores South Korea’s growing push to position artificial intelligence at the center of its future defense capabilities through closer collaboration among government, industry, academia, and the military.

“This is an important starting point for South Chungcheong to leap forward as a core hub of Korea’s K-defense industry,” said Hong Jong-wan, the province’s administrative vice governor.

“We will complete a future defense industry ecosystem linked with the defense national industrial complex and the Defense Future Technology Research Center, centered on the AI defense robot industry.”

Turning AI Into Capability

The cluster will provide dedicated facilities for research, testing, demonstration, and technology validation, while helping defense startups and commercial tech firms transition AI-enabled systems into military applications.

Plans include a central support facility, a demonstration center, and a 45,000-square-meter (484,400-square-foot) testing ground in Nonsan where AI-powered robotic systems can be evaluated before operational deployment.

Scheduled to run through 2031, the project is expected to strengthen South Korea’s AI defense industrial base while generating an estimated 509 billion won ($368 million) in economic output.

The initiative builds on the country’s broader military AI strategy, including the launch of the Add+i secure AI platform for classified defense research, a partnership between Naver and Korea Aerospace Industries to develop sovereign AI for future military platforms, and AI-powered military robotics programs led by Hyundai Rotem.
