The US Air Force is investing another $2.9 million into Palladyne AI to advance embodied AI technology that allows autonomous robots to learn from human demonstrations and execute tasks with minimal operator input.

The additional funding will support demonstrations of robots that can acquire new skills, collaborate with remote operators, and autonomously execute mission-relevant tasks in complex environments.

Embodied AI for Autonomous Robots

Developed by Palladyne AI, Palladyne IQ is an embodied AI platform designed to teach robots new behaviors through as few as one to five human demonstrations. 

The software can apply learned skills across different environments and execute them without relying on cloud connectivity, making it suitable for communications-degraded or contested operational environments.

Unlike systems built for specific platforms, Palladyne IQ is hardware-agnostic and can integrate with various robotic systems and sensor suites. It combines real-time sensor fusion with adaptive AI processing at the edge, allowing robots to continue operating in environments with limited external support.

The air force first awarded a contract in 2023 and has continued expanding its investment as the technology progressed through multiple development milestones, including completion of its first phase in 2024. The latest contract option brings the total value to $10.6 million.

“When a customer like the US Air Force commits additional funding after seeing the technology perform, that is an unambiguous signal,” Palladyne chief executive Ben Wolff said

“Palladyne IQ’s AI architecture is working.”
